Dermal fillers are injectable products used to improve the appearance of facial wrinkles and creases that occur with normal aging. They do so by adding volume and hydration to areas that are lacking. Common sites of treatment are the “smile lines” or nasolabial folds that run from the nose to the corner of the mouth. They are also used to give shape and fullness to the lips.
One of the most popular dermal fillers available today is Juvederm. It is made of hyaluronic acid, a substance that is found naturally in the skin but diminishes with aging. The hyaluronic acid is manufactured into a gel, which can be easily injected into the desired area. The gel is composed of hyaluronic acid crystals which absorb water, adding volume and hydration to the treatment site. This fills out the skin folds or plumps up the lips.
The Juvederm line consists of a wide range of products designed to meet a variety of aesthetic needs. They vary based on thickness, strength and longevity, and can be selected based on your personal needs:
The experts at ACQUA Medspa will help you determine which filler is best for YOU!
Treatments with Juvederm are performed by ACQUA’s aesthetic injector specialists in our luxurious treatment rooms. These simple, minimally-invasive treatments take just a few minutes to complete. First, we do a thorough evaluation to determine your ideal treatment plan. Next, we will apply a numbing cream to assure your comfort. Using a tiny needle, the filler is injected into the treatment site.
The improvement is visible immediately following dermal filler treatment. However, initially you will experience minor swelling so it usually takes a few days to see your actual result. We advise avoiding exercise and alcohol for the first 24 hours to prevent additional swelling. Depending on the product and your metabolism the results usually last 1 to 2 years.
Dermal fillers such as Juvederm are extremely safe. While there may be some minor swelling and redness, this usually resolves in hours to a few days. On rare occasions, these symptoms may last longer. There have been reports of injections into blood vessels that could result in long-term damage, though we, fortunately, have not experienced this in our practice.
There isn’t any preparation necessary for a Juvederm session at Acqua Medspa. These sessions take just 20 minutes or so and you can get right back to work or your normal activities. They are truly a “lunchtime” procedure at our offices on Gulf Freeway in Webster. There isn’t any recovery or downtime.
For most of our dermal filler injections at Acqua Medspa we apply topical numbing cream prior to your session. This adds some time to your appointment to allow the anesthetic to fully take effect, but it definitely makes the area feel little during your injections.
We always offer topical numbing prior to your Juvederm injections. Some patients prefer it; other patients don’t feel the need. As with all of our treatments at Acqua Medspa, we tailor what we do to your unique needs.
Neuromodulators like Botox work by relaxing the muscle they are injected into. Certain wrinkles are formed by muscle contractions under the skin — crow’s feet at the outside of the eyes, the 11s between the eyebrows, and forehead lines. These are called dynamic wrinkles. Botox blocks the nerve messages that are sent from the muscle to the brain, so the brain never receives the message to contract the muscle. The muscle stays relaxed, and the wrinkle doesn’t form above it.
Fillers such as the entire Juvederm line have no effect on dynamic wrinkles formed by muscle contractions. Fillers work on what are called static wrinkles. These are wrinkles caused by sun damage, declining collagen production, environmental factors, and personal habits such as smoking. Static wrinkles are on display at all times. Fillers are injected beneath the wrinkle, crease, or area of volume loss and they simply return volume and push the skin back upwards, erasing the wrinkle or returning volume.
All of the Juvederm fillers require only a single treatment session to deliver their results. These don’t require a series of treatments. One injection session provides results from between 9 months and up to two years with Juvederm Voluma.
The original Juvederm filler was approved by the FDA in 2006. Juvederm, along with Restylane, were the original dermal fillers. Since that time, the Juvederm line has been expanded to target different areas of the face. For instance, Voluma was developed specifically for returning volume to the cheeks. Volbella was created to add subtle volume to the lips, whereas Ultra was created to add noticeable volume to the lips.
But you don’t need to be a Juvederm expert. That’s our job at Acqua Medspa. When we see you during your initial consultation, you’ll describe the issues you’d like to address with your facial aging. From there, we then discuss the various Juvederm fillers that could be right for what you want to address.
One of the great side benefits of offering Juvederm fillers is that all of these fillers are made from hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid can be instantly neutralized by the injection of an enzyme, hyaluronidase. This negates the effects of the filler. So, if you don’t like the look of the filler after it is injected, we can, basically, erase it if you choose. That’s very rarely needed, but it is reassuring for our patients.
