Chronic Skin Diseases Caused by Bras

back view of beautiful sexy woman unhooking her lace bra Bras are known for being incredibly uncomfortable, and finding a bra that fits and feels good can seem like trying to find the holy grail! It is important that you also know that bras that do not fit properly, irritate the skin, or have certain materials in them can contribute to a number of temporary and chronic skin diseases that can cause added discomfort. At Acqua Med Spa, we can educate you on the various conditions that may arise from wearing tight and uncomfortable bras!

What Are Some Chronic Skin Diseases That Can Be Caused by Wearing a Bra?

  • Intertrigo is an inflammation of the skin caused by bacterial or fungal infections that is exacerbated when the skin is kept in a moist environment, such as between tight clothing and sweat.
  • Eczema, also referred to as atopic dermatitis, is an itchy rash that can be aggravated by friction from tight-fitting bras.
  • Folliculitis occurs when bacteria infect a hair follicle causing red bumps and pus-filled spots on the skin, which can become irritated when trapped underneath tight fabrics like bras. It’s important to choose soft fabric bras made with natural fibers such as cotton to reduce your risk of developing skin irritation or infection.
  • Tinea versicolor is a fungal skin infection that causes discolored patches on the body and can become worse when tight clothing like bras rubs against it.
  • Contact dermatitis is an allergic reaction to certain fabrics, which can be caused by bras with synthetic fibers or metal components such as underwires. To combat this problem, opt for soft fabric bras without metal components.

Wearing a bra can contribute to the development of chronic skin diseases if you fail to choose the right one. Take care in wearing comfortable fabric bras with natural fibers to reduce your risk of developing these conditions. Additionally, washing and changing your bra regularly will also help keep your skin healthy and free from infection and irritation.
